About ISE

History and Mission

The Institute for Surgical Excellence (ISE) is a 501(c)(3) public non-profit organization formed in 2014. Its mission is to create solutions for complex healthcare problems related to emerging surgical technologies to improve patient outcomes and safety. ISE utilizes a consensus-driven approach to create new surgical standards by bringing together key stakeholders including surgeons, educators, researchers, engineers, computer scientists, hospital leadership, government, and industry innovators.

Through this process, ISE:

01. Identifies issues with the use of new technologies

02. Sets clearly defined goals to address the issues

03. Promotes collaboration among stakeholders

04. Determines and fills gaps in knowledge and skills

05. Promotes information sharing amongst healthcare professionals and healthcare consumers

ISE’s Full-Cycle Model for Education, Training, Assessment, and Surveillance for robotic-assisted surgical procedures is providing a roadmap for areas where consensus is needed, and standardization can be achieved. Each component of the full-cycle model was addressed through a series of consensus conferences to develop new standards for robotic-assisted surgery.

To date, ISE has hosted, facilitated, and participated in 17 consensus conferences to continue to progress towards expert-driven and evidence-based surgical standards.
