Upcoming
Healthcare Explorers Program
ISE works to educate and inspire future healthcare professionals. ISE partners with the DaVinci Science Center to present medical career exploration events for school students. Dressed in scrubs, students learn about critical organs and anatomy on a synthetic human cadaver before simulating robotic surgery. This program unmasks the mystique of the medical profession and provide exposure to new medical and surgical technologies to influence course selection, college pathways, and eventually, career decisions of young students. ISE is actively looking for partners to expand the Healthcare Explorers Day program nationally.
2021 Program
From lungs and kidneys to cadavers, robotic surgery, and viruses, more than 50 seventh-grade students at St. Thomas More School in Allentown, PA got to experience what a day in the life of a nurse, virologist, surgeon, and other health care workers is like.
"We had six stations. One station is a heart station, where kids have the chance to learn about how a heart works," said Dr. Martin Martino with the Institute for Surgical Excellence. “The program is all about inspiring kids and letting them get hands-on practical experience in the field.”
Memorable Student Experience
This is an experience the students will remember forever. They commented:
“It was really fun and interactive.”
“What a great way to learn what happens in hospitals and during surgery.”
“That was a really cool experience!”
“Amazing!”
“I have never seen anything like robotic surgery.”
“I liked hearing the nurse’s perspective.”
May 2022 Program
An ISE Healthcare Explorers program was held on May 19, 2022 for 7th and 8th graders at the Palmer Catholic Academy in Ponte Verdra Beach, Florida. The students worked with an artificial torso to conduct an endoscopy, viewing the insides of organs projected onto the gym screen. Students were donned in surgical hats and masks and acted as consultants to help diagnose a disease with other doctors virtually through Zoom. They experienced using surgical tools and got to “test drive” the robotics device used for surgeries. It was another very successful Healthcare Explorers event!
