New capability brings robotic surgical training to institutions globally in effort to standardize surgeon education and improve patient outcome.
Washington, DC (July 24, 2014) –In a revolutionary step towards standardized robotic surgical training, the Institute for Surgical Excellence (ISE) — a fast-growing, public non-profit organization dedicated to improving surgical care and patient outcomes — will add a new physician education capability with its acquisition of the Robotics Training Network (RTN).
With the inclusion of RTN, ISE continues to increase its impact and outreach to offer an enhanced suite of validated robotic surgical training services and curriculum to medical professionals and institutions around the world. The two organizations share a goal to ensure that physicians who utilize cutting-edge surgical technologies deliver the highest quality of care and improved outcomes for their patients.
Since 2013, RTN has expanded from its nine founding institutions — including, Cleveland Clinic, Duke University, Johns Hopkins University, Lehigh Valley Health Network, and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill — to incorporate 50 sites that are currently implementing the program. In the coming months, ISE will work with RTN to expand the existing multidisciplinary network of medical institutions and offer additional online resources and technical support. “Medical professionals are presented with an invaluable opportunity through emerging technologies to provide patients with safer and more effective surgical options,” said ISE. “By ensuring that standards for implementing these technologies are developed, we can offer both patients and surgeons themselves a level of security in the knowledge that accredited, quality training programs are in place.”
The addition of RTN not only brings a new capability to ISE, but also is a groundbreaking step towards standardizing robotic surgical training and curriculum. The accredited program developed by RTN combines online curriculum with dry lab and operating room components that program administrators can score using a validated assessment tool. The web-based nature of the training gives both the trainer and trainee the ability to track progress online and the flexibility to incorporate lessons into a physician’s workflow.
The announcement comes on the heels of a robotic surgery training exercise hosted by ISE Board members with physicians from around the world at the annual scientific meeting of the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS) and the International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) in Washington, DC. The scientific meeting serves as the largest venue for those in the field of urogynecology and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery to come together for education, networking, and sharing.
